Bawku Tensions Boil Over: IGP Leads Delegation to Intervene
Following a violent clash in Bawku that resulted in the death of one person, Fuseini Iddrisu, and injuries to five others (including a police and immigration officer), Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno is heading a team of operations, investigation, and intelligence officers to the Upper East Region. The mission aims to assess the security situation firsthand.
The IGP’s visit follows Wednesday’s incident, which also saw damage to police property, including vehicles and rented accommodation in Binduri, by angry youth. While a joint police and military operation restored calm on April 9, 2025, tensions flared again on Thursday, April 10.
According to a statement released by the Ghana Police Service on April 10, the IGP’s team will “commiserate with the deceased family, visit the injured persons, and reach out to officers who lost their properties.”
However, reports indicate that the residence of Bawku Central MP and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, in the Wiidi suburb of Bawku, was vandalized and partially set on fire by unidentified youth on Thursday. Security sources confirm that the military has intervened, deploying to strategic locations to prevent further attacks.
This latest incident is believed to be connected to the death of a young man during Wednesday’s clash between youth groups and law enforcement.
The Police Service has assured the public of its ongoing collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders to maintain peace, security, and order in Bawku.
